    In demanding industrial applications where high loads, low friction, and reliable performance are paramount, the selection of bearing and bushing materials is critical. PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), particularly in rod or bar form, stands out as a premier material solution for these challenging environments. Its unique combination of properties makes PTFE rods an ideal raw material for machining high-performance bearings and bushings capable of handling significant stresses.

    PTFE rods offer several inherent advantages crucial for high-load applications:

    *   Exceptionally Low Coefficient of Friction: PTFE possesses one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid material, significantly reducing wear on mating surfaces and minimizing power loss due to friction. This allows bearings and bushings made from PTFE rods to operate smoothly even under substantial pressure.

    *   High Load Capacity: While pure PTFE has limitations regarding cold flow under extreme sustained loads, the material can be reinforced or filled (e.g., with glass fibers, carbon, or bronze powder) to dramatically enhance its compressive strength and resistance to deformation. These reinforced PTFE rods can withstand very high loads without sacrificing their low-friction characteristics.

    *   Superior Wear Resistance: PTFE exhibits excellent resistance to wear, contributing to longer service life for bearings and bushings. When combined with appropriate fillers, its wear resistance is further amplified, making it suitable for applications involving abrasive environments or oscillating motions.

    *   Chemical Inertness: PTFE is highly resistant to virtually all chemicals and solvents, making bearings and bushings fabricated from PTFE rods suitable for use in corrosive environments where metals or other plastics might fail.

    *   Broad Temperature Range: PTFE maintains its useful properties across a wide temperature spectrum, typically from cryogenic temperatures up to approximately 260°C (500°F), ensuring consistent performance in diverse operating conditions.

    *   Self-Lubricating: PTFE bearings and bushings are inherently self-lubricating. This eliminates the need for external lubrication systems, reducing maintenance requirements and preventing contamination in sensitive applications like food processing or clean rooms. It also allows for operation in dry or submerged conditions.

    Machining and Applications:

    PTFE rods provide an excellent substrate for machining custom bearings, bushings, thrust washers, and wear pads. Manufacturers can easily turn, mill, or bore these rods into precise shapes to meet specific dimensional and functional requirements. Common high-load applications include:

    *   Heavy machinery pivot points

    *   Hydraulic cylinder bearings

    *   Pump and valve components

    *   Linkages in construction and equipment

    *   Marine applications (corrosion resistance)

    *   Aerospace components

    *   Chemical processing equipment
